Choosing a preschool isn’t just about bright walls and friendly staff. It’s about trust. You’re handing over your child for 8 hours a day—you need more than a tour script. These are the questions to ask on a preschool tour (including some we wish parents wouldn’t ask, but should).
The Basics You Should Always Ask
These are the essential questions. If a school can’t answer these clearly, that’s a red flag.
- What does a typical daily schedule look like?
- What’s the student-to-teacher ratio by age group?
- How do teachers handle conflict, redirection, or behavior issues?
- What kind of training and certifications do teachers have?
- What’s included in tuition? What’s extra?
Questions That Reveal the School’s Culture
These go deeper. They tell you how the school actually runs—not just what’s in the brochure.
- How long do teachers typically stay at your school?
- What do you do when a child doesn’t adjust well?
- How do you handle transitions (new students, potty training, classroom moves)?
- Can I see a recent state inspection report?
- How do you keep families informed about their child’s day?
Questions We Wish More Parents Would Ask
We want families to think beyond curriculum and activities. Ask us the hard questions—we’ll respect you for it.
- How do you support teachers so they don’t burn out?
- What’s your plan if a lead teacher suddenly leaves?
- What kind of families tend to thrive in your school?
- How do you measure a child’s progress if you don’t use grades or tests?
- What values do you expect families to support at home?
Things to Watch for During the Tour
Even if no one says it out loud, you’ll learn a lot by observing. Look for:
- Teachers who seem calm, prepared, and engaged with kids
- Children who are focused—but not controlled
- Clean, organized spaces where kids can move freely
- Leaders who answer confidently—and don’t dodge tough questions
Final Tip: Trust What You See and Hear
Don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions. Don’t settle for vague answers. And don’t worry about being “that parent.” The right school will welcome your questions—even the uncomfortable ones.
At Excelled Montessori, we believe parents are partners. You should leave your tour feeling informed, respected, and clear about whether this is the right fit for your child.
